Ambi­tion

Rev­o­lu­tion­iz­ing the African agri­cul­tur­al land­scape while com­bat­ing the envi­ron­men­tal impact of the fash­ion indus­try. By trans­form­ing agri­cul­tur­al waste into bio­ma­te­ri­als, they are reduc­ing pol­lu­tion and also uplift­ing small­hold­er farm­ers’ liveli­hoods. Rethread Africa aims to increase farm­ers’ income by 30%, cre­ate green jobs, and con­tribute to a more sus­tain­able fash­ion sec­tor.

Solu­tion

Inte­grat­ing small­hold­er farm­ers into the sup­ply chain by pur­chas­ing their sug­ar­cane bagasse as a waste prod­uct. This pro­vides farm­ers with addi­tion­al income and mit­i­gates the envi­ron­men­tal impact of tex­tile pro­duc­tion. Through inno­v­a­tive process­es, the waste is con­vert­ed into poly­hy­drox­yalka­noates (PHA), a biodegrad­able alter­na­tive to poly­ester. The approach address­es the urgent need for sus­tain­able mate­ri­als in the fash­ion indus­try while sup­port­ing rur­al economies and pro­mot­ing envi­ron­men­tal stew­ard­ship
