Ambition
Revolutionizing the African agricultural landscape while combating the environmental impact of the fashion industry. By transforming agricultural waste into biomaterials, they are reducing pollution and also uplifting smallholder farmers’ livelihoods. Rethread Africa aims to increase farmers’ income by 30%, create green jobs, and contribute to a more sustainable fashion sector.
Solution
Integrating smallholder farmers into the supply chain by purchasing their sugarcane bagasse as a waste product. This provides farmers with additional income and mitigates the environmental impact of textile production. Through innovative processes, the waste is converted into polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), a biodegradable alternative to polyester. The approach addresses the urgent need for sustainable materials in the fashion industry while supporting rural economies and promoting environmental stewardship
